summer-resort. At (7 M.) Thörl (Sommerauer), a village with wire-
works, the brooks from the S. slopes of the Hochschwab combine to
form the Thörlbach. Above the village rises the picturesque ruin of
Schachenstein.
A road leads from Thörl to the N.W. through the pretty St. Ilgner-Tal
to (4½ M.) St. Ilgen (2400 ft.; Pierer) and the (4½ M.) Hôtel Bodenbauer
(2876 ft.), finely situated at the head of the valley. The attractive ascent
of the Karlhochkoget (6870 ft.) may be made hence in 3-3½ hrs. Ascent
of the Hochschwab (7475 ft.) viâ the Gehackte or viâ the Bodenbauet and the
Hochstein-Alpe, see p. 180.
We next traverse the narrow Thörltal, passing several iron
works, to (12½ M.) Winkel, (13 M.) Kapfenberg-Lokalbahn, ½ M.
to the E. of which is Bad Steinerhof (p. 176), and (14 M.) Kapfenberg-
Südbahn (p. 176). Hence to (3 M.) Bruck on the Mur, see p. 176.

the Enns. 25½ M. Ramingdorf.
28 M. Steyr (990 ft.; Rail. Restaurant; Steyrerhof, R. 2-6 K.;
Schiff; Krebs), with 17,600 inhab., at the confluence of the Steyr
with the Enns, is noted for its iron-wares. The town, situated be-
tween the two rivers, is connected with its nine suburbs (Ennsdorf,
Steyrdorf, etc.) by three bridges. On a hill rises Burg Steyr (18th
cent., but mentioned in the 10th cent.), the property of Prince
Lamberg, with a fine park (adm. on application). The Gothic Church,
built in 1443-1680, contains stained glass of the 16th cent. and a
font in bronze, with reliefs of 1660. The tower (288 ft.) was rebuilt
in 1885-89 after plans by Schmidt of Vienna. The Rathaus, in the
rococo style, and the extensive Austrian Rifle Factory (adm. on ap-
plication) are also worthy of notice. The monuments of Joe. Werndl
(d. 1889), founder of the rifle-factory, in the Franz-Josef-Platz,
and of Ant. Bruckner ( 1824-96), the composer, in the Pfarr-Platz,
are both by Tilgner.

the (½ hr.) Hohe Ennsleithe, the (¼ hr.) Tabor, and the (½ hr.) Dachsberg.

The to tower on the Damberg (2450 ft.), affording a splendid view, is easily
reached in 2 hrs.; about ½ hr. from the top is the Inn 'Zur Dambergwarte'.
