from the (2 hrs.) Andritz - Ursprung (p. 188) viâ Puch and the Göstinger
Alphütte (rfmts.) in 2½-3 hrs.
Tobelbad (1150 ft.; Kurhaus; Konigsbrunn Inn), pleasantly situated
among pine-woods, 7½ M. to the S.E. of Gratz, may be reached either by
carr. and pair viâ Strassgang in 1 hr., or in ½ hr.'s walk from the (25 min.)
station of Premstätten, on the Köflach railway (see below).
From Gratz TO KÖFLACH, 25½ M., railway in 1½ hr. The line, con-
structed for the coal-traffic, descends the broad valley of the Mur, nearly
due S., to (7½ M.) Premstätten, where it turns to the N.W. into the valley
of the Kainach, and ascends past (10 M.) Liboch (branch-line to Wies, see
below). From (25½ M) Köflach (Bräuhaus) a road leads to the N.W.
over the Stubalp-Sattel (5090 ft.), to Weiskirchen and (10 hrs.) Judenburg
(p. 200), in the upper valley of the Mur.
From Gratz To Klagenfurt VIÂ Schwanberg. Railway in 2¼ hrs. to
(42 M.) Wies; then a carriage-road to (4½ hrs.) Wuchern-Mahrenberg (p. 200).
— At (10 M.) Liboch (see above) our line diverges to the left from the Köflach
line and leads viâ Lannach, (19½ M.) Preding-Wisselsdorf (branch to Stainz,
5 M.) and Gross-Florian to (29 M.) Deulsch-Landsberg (1220 ft.; Fritzberg;
Treiber), a prettily-situated village with an old château. We next pass
the handsome château of Hollenegg to (34½ M.) Schwanberg; the little town
(Grasser; Mollak) lies 3 M. to the W. The next and last station is (42 M.)
Wies (Heinisser), pleasantly situated on the Weisse Sulm, with iron-works
and forges, commanded by an old castle. — We now follow the road
towards the S.M. to (3 M.) Eibiswald (diligence thrice daily in 60 min.),
and ascend thence by a steep Lut well-kept road over the Radlberg (2200 ft.),
which commands a fine view of the Drave Valley and the Karawanken
Chain to the S., and of the Schwanberg Alps on the N. The road then
descends into the valley of the Drave to (11 M.) Mahrenberg (Lukas), a
straggling village, with a ruined monastery, from which we cross the
Drave by means of a ferry to the (1½ hr.) railway-station of Wuchern (p. 196).
The Schwanberg Alps attract many excursionists from Gratz (comp. Map,
p. 200). We take the train as far as Deutsch-Landsberg (see above), cross
the Lassnitz, and ascend to the right viâ (2½ hrs.) Trahütten and the Parfue
Inn (3245 ft.; fine view) to (1½ hr.) St. Maria or Glashütten (4180 ft. ;
Inn). Thence we follow the road to the right to the (1¼ hr.) Weineben
(5465 ft.), the boundary between Styria and Carinthia, and skirt the fence
to the left to the (1 hr.) depression between the Hühnerstützen and the
Moschkogel, in which, a little below us, is the Grillitsch-Hütte (5725 ft.;
rfmts.). From this point we mount in 1½ hr. more, through the Grosse
Kar, to the summit of the Koralpe (7025 ft.), the highest peak of the
Schwanberg Alps, locally called the Speikkogel. The Koralpen-Haus (6435 ft.;
Inn), ½ hr. from the top, is on the W. side. View to the W. — Descent
on the E. side viâ the Brendl-Hütle to (4½ hrs.) Schuanberg (see above);
on the W. viâ the Hipfl-Hütten to (4 hrs.) Wolfsberg (p. 196), or viâ the
Kollnitzer-Alpe and Gemersdorf to (4 hrs.) St. Andrä (p. 196).
